While racism in America remained legal until the passing of the Civil Rights Acts in the 1960s, President Abraham Lincoln put an end to slavery with the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. This marked an important step towards life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for descendants of the African diaspora.

The only problem?

Not everyone knew about it.

Two years passed before news of freedom reached enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas. But when it did (on June 19, 1865), an independence day that all Americans could celebrate was born.
